Specifying default outlook signature for a user.

By Max Ranzau

Scenario: A user has access to multiple signatures through the Instant Mail module of RES PowerFuse. Besides this we would like to have a specific signature as default. The problem is that the Instant Mail module in RES Powerfuse 2008 SR3, currently doesn’t support changing the order in which signatures are applied.

The following PDF document offers a workaround for this issue:  Icon, PDF file

RunBook Automation eBooks

animated book Ever since RES changed the tagline for Wisdom to RunBook automation for Windows, many of us did not have a clue what RunBook automation really was. If you still feel somewhat in the dark on this important matter, then you will be pleased to know that RES has sponsored RealTime Publishers to write 3 brand new articles. Have a look at below. Click on the image, for some very good information on the subject.

Realtime Publishers RunbookNote this is pretty high-level stuff. If you want the nuts and bolts, stick around… :) There might very well be coming  more fun to do with Wisdom in a short while.

One application in Powerfuse using App-V on Workstation/Server

Animated, Gears, boxSo you’re running RES Powerfuse, Microsoft App-V, Windows XP/Vista and Windows TerminalServer? Instead of having to install in the same directory on the desktop- and the server version of App-V, you can do an environment variable, which can handle the install path difference. What will I gain from this, you might ask? Well, You’ll only need to maintain one application, instead of two (or more)

This is how this can be done. Download the document here: Icon, PDF file

Zen and the Art of PowerTrace

animated bookA  nice presentation shared by one of the friendly folks over at RES (Me!). This one is called Business Value of PowerTrace. It essentially shows you all the cool things which you can find out about your organization, using PowerTrace, a component of PowerFuse 2008 Enterprise edition. Please be sure to check the speaker notes on the PowerPoint, as there is a ton of valuable information in there. Some of the things you can discover are:

  • What’s a certain user been doing at a certain time?
  • Who’s been doing things they’re not supposed to do?
  • Who’s been editing a certain [type of] docment in a given department?
  • Web activity of a user or department
  • What’s the Top-10 usage of applications and websites?
  • What’s the daily maximum users on my terminal servers?

These and other questions are answered in the presentation. Enjoy: Icon, RarFile

Creating a Streamed Citrix Application in PowerFuse

Animated, Gears, boxHere’s a fine article submitted to RESguru.com by a nice fellow at Intercept IT in the UK. The technote describes in detail how to integrate applications from a Citrix Streaming Server into the RES PowerFuse environment, using the Generic Isolation Integration feature of the product. Great work dude – The RES Community salutes you!

Wisdom PowerSaver/ROI Calculator

Icon, calculatorA new calculator has been posted. This one will help you determine how much power and thereby money you can save by utilizing RES Wisdom to turn off/servers in your environment. This subject was adressed in an article by Edgar over at the RESinside blog. The PowerSaver calculator builds on that article. On top of that, a ROI calculator has been thrown in for good measure. This will enable you to, just based on the simplest of Wisdom’s features, find out how long before Wisdom has paid for itself.

PowerTrace DBsize Estimator

Icon, calculatorThis is kinda cool. This estimation tool will let you take a qualified guess at how big your PowerFuse database will be, approximatly. Now - before you jump in to it, here’s a brief reality check. The calculator only deals with the big tables in the PowerFuse datastore, namely the PowerTrace tables. These are the ones that matter when it comes to size. The rest of the database would rarely exceed 100 Meg anyway. Just to be clear, the following items are not taken into consideration:

  • Custom Resources
  • Uploaded .ADM files
  • Desktop and Screensaver bitmaps
  • Odd-sized icons
  • Other stuff you upload into the database.

The PowerTrace engine in PowerFuse will create database records the moment a user starts an application or launches a website. When the user closes the app or website, the record create earlier is updated with and end-timestamp. Each record created by PowerTrace is 512 bytes in size.

The calculator is an external spreadsheet stored at EditGrid.com, where one can make online excel calculators. Have a look at the calculator by clicking on the preview image below:

Scr, powertrace calc

And the results are in!

Icon, statsOn this most historic of days, January 20th 2009, it would seem appropriate to have a look at how RESguru is doing in the world :-) Seems the blog is picking up quite a following from the first days in the states. New Technote: PowerFuse Variables, Tags and Functions

Animated, Gears, box Hi everybody. Here is yet another interesting technote. This one describes all the variables, tags and functions which are available currently in PowerFuse. The document is now available in the Technote Library, but can also be viewed here. Note, since the technote is rather large, a PDF is also available to download.

Anyway, go see the technote here. Download the PDF here:  Icon, PDF file

How to setup RSS feed on your phone

icon-rssAs show in the sidepanel on the right, WordPress offers the blog updates as RSS feeds. Iit probably would make sense to explain how to get it working. If you have a RSS reader on your phone, you can keep up to date with the latest postings on RESguru.com wherever you are.

This has only been tested on a Symbian based Nokia phone so far. It seems most of these have RSS readers built into the web browser. Here’s how to configure it.

  • Start the webbrowser on your phone
  • Go to bookmarks and select the folder Web Feeds
  • In the menu, goto Manage Feed | New Feed
  • In the Titlefield, enter RESguru
  • In the Address field, enter http://resguru.com/feed
  • Save, go back to the menu and select Refresh

There is an alternate feed for comments located here: http://resguru.com/comments/feed
