RG04C – Detecting Windows8 in WM2012

By Max Ranzau

Note: As of Febuary 6th 2013 this article is obsolete as WM 2012 SR2 does include OS zone rules for both Windows 8 and Server 2012

As you’re probably well aware of, Workspace Manager 2012 SR1 does not support Windows 8. You can however be sure that it will be supported by RES when Microsoft releases it. Since Workspace Manager 2012 doesn’t know Windows 8, there is no zone rule for detecting it either. Here is a cheap trick to circumvent that in the meantime.

  1. Create a new Zone under the User Context node. Call it Windows 8 or something
  1. Add a Registry Setting rule.
  2. In the Setting field, enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName
  3. In the Value field, enter Windows 8*

The wildcard (*) will allow you to test both the Consumer Preview or whatever earlier beta you currently might have. The resulting rule should now look something like the one on the right. And you can now detect Windows 8, whatever flavor.
